Instagram. My Top Tips.

I certainly wouldn’t say I’m an expert on Instagram but I do know that I enjoy creating exciting visual content for my followers and for my brand. I do get asked by friends how I do my Instagram so here it is- Inspired by my hubby who said people would enjoy knowing a few top tips, so I hope you do!

Being a ‘creative’ doing flatlays, finding a visually pleasing image I want to share or taking an outfit picture that I actually like is something that I really enjoy doing. I love seeing my feed fill with images that create a nice flow.

From taking the photo to editing it and to when it finally comes together (oh and you’ve finally decided on an appropriate caption) is a great feeling. It requires the same amount of patience and eye for detail as it does to complete a painting or drawing etc.

I spend copious amounts of time on instagram being inspired by other accounts and influencers. So here’s my top 10 tips on what I think makes a great Instagram account.

  1. Choose your theme. I always work with a black and white minimal approach. Be consistent with your theme and style. Make your brand known. Pick a filter and stick to it for all your photos for consistency. (However if it doesn’t suit the image then don’t use it, maybe even rethink the image.)
  2. Have a USP. Weather it’s a chestfie like @lornaluxe or a Killer flatlay like @theversastyle or @phoebesoup. Make yourself known for certain content that way people remember you.
  3. Know your viewer/customer. Look at what they liked in the past, what they didn’t and give them what they want. Know what they want to see and what captions they find the most appealing.
  4. Variety is the spice of insta-life. Vary your shots. Keep the viewer interested. Mix your flatlays up with selfies,#ootds, food, travel and inspiration.
  5. Don’t be scared to go ‘off piste’. If you are a brand don’t be scared to think outside the box. Not every post has to be about a product or promoting something you sell, but make sure it’s always in keeping with the brands style.
  6. Don’t take it personally. We are all guilty of seeking gratification from a photo and how many likes it receives. Don’t worry about your likes just be happy with what you have posted. People will view it regardless of whether they double tap or not. Equally don’t be worried about your followers. Let them grow organically and don’t be concerned when you lose a few here and there.
  7. Love what you post. If it doesn’t feel right don’t post it.If you don’t have confidence in what you’re posting then others won’t either.
  8. Take pride in your Layout – consider your layout and how that image will look visually next to others you have posted. Make it aesthetically pleasing for the viewer and therefore they will be more likely to scroll further down your feed.
  9. Quality over quantityMake your photos quality images over the quantity of images you post. ( I swear by my Olympus PEN Camera but sometimes I see something and capture it on my iPhone) If you haven’t got an image to post that day don’t try and force it. Let it happen naturally. Don’t post if your not inspired.
  10. Have fun. The most important point of all. Instagram is supposed to be a fun way of sharing our passion with other like minded people we may never get to meet. Inspire others and let others inspire you.

Happy Instagramming!

P.S. One thing I love to do is include some branding, a personalised light box or phone case so that people know its your own original photo.

I’ve also shared my top 10 most likes images.

1. A @lornaluxe shot is always a winner. I am still overwhelmed to have worked with such an inspiring influencer.

2. A travel throwback. It’s ok to repost old photos. It actually got more response a year later as a #TBT.

3. A product shot selfie. Instead of showing just the product it helps to wear it to show the customer how it looks and how they could style it.

4. A ‘travel diary’ shot from my latest trip to Amsterdam. I love to travel and this is huge theme within my Instagram, not forgetting the food and drink too.

5. An outfit of the day.

6. Blogger Style with @Mademoiselle__K yet another amazing influencer I’ve had the privilege to work with.

7. A BTS- A behind the scenes look at our latest shoot. Its always nice to share with your followers what you are up to.

8. A personal shot with my hubby. Caught on camera by my mum.

9. My Desk- a shot of my workspace- A look into my world as it actually is.

10. A clear crisp flatlay. A set up shot but aesthetically really pleasing.

Amsterdam Top 10

So, here’s my Amsterdam Top 10- (tried and tested)

There’s just something about Amsterdam that has this energy that draws you in and makes you never want to leave.

It is super stylish, full of history, exciting, refreshing and has more brunch spots than anywhere I’ve been before, seemingly it has every element you need for a super cool City break.

Amsterdam has a huge place in my heart as it is where I met my husband 5 years ago. We are so lucky that after just a short 50 minute flight you are landing in such a cool city with so much to do. Luckily for us we also have some awesome friends who live there and can show us the hidden gems!

Here are my top picks if you are popping to Amsterdam (surprise surprise, my picks revolve around food and drink…)

I think it’s safe to say that even if you live there you will never be able to get through all of the cool places and restaurants the City has to offer…but one can always try.

1.Sir Albert Hotel-  www.siralberthotel.com – @siralbertamsterdam

Our home from home for our trip. A cosy hotel with on trend monochrome rooms, amazing staff and one of Amsterdam’s best asian restaurants all housed in one place. Sir Albert sits in De Pijp a really great area for wandering and only a 20 minutes mooch into the centre and comes complete with kind, morale boosting memos on your mirror.

2. Cafe George. www.cafegeorge.nl @georgeamsterdam

There are a few around the city but after a walk through The Vondelpark we popped to George W.P.A in Museumplein. Perfect ‘people watching’ hotspot.

EAT: Club Sandwich and Fries. SIP ON: Rose

3. Corner Bakery Amsterdam – @cornerbakeryamsterdam

This is a charming little spot in the De Pijp area. After coming across this place on instagram I had to get a bite of the action (pardon the pun). When in Amsterdam pancakes are a must. Here you will find some of the best and freshest pancakes you will ever eat. Huge statement but best to try it for yourself.

EAT: Pancakes SIP ON: Freshly made MilkShakes

4.Pulitzer Hotel- Pulitzer Bar. www.pulitzeramsterdam.com – @pulitzer.amsterdam

Well worth a visit just to check out the hotel.

This sumptuous darkly lit bar is the perfect place to chill after a long days walking around Amsterdam with views over the canals.

SIP ON: Your favourite cocktail- don’t forget to check out the cocktail of the day.

5. De Foodhallen- http://foodhallen.nl

Here in Cheshire we are super lucky to have Altrincham Market. If you are a fan of that then this is for you…So much food to choose from, live band and if you have time they even have a cinema.

EAT: Bulls & Dogs Hot Dog. SIP ON: Gin & Tonic – take a permanent residence at the Gin & Tonic bar and make your way through the menu.

6.The Hoxton- www.thehoxton.com – @thehoxtonhotel

Super cool urban hotspot and watering hole for the cool kids. You can also stay here… oh and they have a Photo Booth and graffiti words of wisdom on the wall. Need I say more….

SIP ON: Old Fashioned. EAT: I’ve also heard the restaurant is amazing too, must try next time.

7. Van Gogh Museum-

We were so lucky to stumble across a Banksy exhibition at the Van Gogh. After studying him for years at university and with my love for the ‘unbeautiful’ it really was amazing to see his work up close and personal. Worth checking out what’s on when you are in town.

8. Bakers & Roastershttp://www.bakersandroasters.com – @bakersandroasters

There are no words for this brunch spot. So good we went twice.

EAT: Veggie Breakfast (because of the halloumi) add crispy Bacon.

9.Weekdaywww.shop.weekday.com–  @weekday_stores

You cant really go wrong with shopping in Amsterdam. Take a walk through the main shopping streets and you will find some hidden gems. Our friends recommended Weekday- owned by H&M. A really unique store, with purse friendly, modern fashion influenced by Scandinavian style.

10. De laatste Kruimel– www.delaatstekruimel.nl

Cake lovers this is for you! A recommendation from our friends, so we headed straight for this piece of freshly baked heaven. You cannot not go in after seeing the window of delights. Watch the baker make fresh muffins, cakes and bread whilst you indulge in your sweet treat.

SIP ON: Coffee ( must try for coffee lovers) EAT: Everything- I had a cookie fresh and warm from the oven, but everything looked amazing.

11. For good measure- check out PC Hooftstraat, the hub for designer brands. Its worth a stroll just to see the Chanel store made entirely from glass bricks!

There are so many more places to see… until next time Amsterdam.

Kiki Shoot

Something I love to do with Kiki Minchin is to reinvent the way in which you can wear your pieces.

I have learnt over the years that my favourite items of clothing and accessories are the ones I bring out every year, no matter how old! I don’t believe anyone should ever feel like they can’t wear those boots from last year or that winter coat that is a few years old! You should be able to wear classic pieces all year round and for years to come without feeling ‘last season’ or ‘out of date’.

This theme follows through in the way how we work at Kiki Minchin. I never want our customers to feel ‘last season’ so instead of bringing out new collections every season we re-inspire our customer with new shoots, some new colour ways and new ways of wearing you classic pieces! There’s a lot of pressure for designers to constantly bring designs out for each season, but for me It’s really important to design from the heart and not from what is on trend that season.

This time I wanted to push the boundaries of what we had done before, and I had it in my head I wanted to use smoke bombs to compliment our new colour stones for the Roxy Cage, so here’s what we created!
